In 1999, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, founded International Men’s Day on November 19. As a mark of respect for his father, Teelucksingh chose November 19 for the event.

The idea of creating an International Men’s Day (IMD) has been a hot topic since the 1960s. As reported in the New York Times, on February 24, 1969, “Many men have been agitating privately to have February 23 marked as International Men’s Day.”
