Indonesia Stuns Vietnam 1-0 to Keep AFC Asian Cup 2024 Hopes Alive

SPORT – Indonesia pulled off a stunning upset against Vietnam with a 1-0 victory in their Group D match of the 2024 AFC Asian Cup at Abdullah bin Khalifah Stadium in Doha, Qatar on Friday, January 19, 2024.

The only goal of the match came in the 35th minute from Asnawi Mangkualam, who converted a cross from Witan Sulaeman.

The victory was a major upset, as Vietnam were the defending champions of the tournament and had not lost to Indonesia since 2015.

The win was also a major boost for Indonesia’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage. The Garuda squad are now in second place in Group D with three points, tied with Vietnam.

Indonesia started the match brightly and created several chances early on. In the 13th minute, Witan Sulaeman had a shot saved by Vietnamese goalkeeper Nguyen Manh.

The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute when Asnawi Mangkualam pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired a low shot past Manh.

Vietnam pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but they were unable to break down the Indonesian defense. The Garuda squad defended stoutly and kept Vietnam at bay.

The closest Vietnam came to scoring was in the 80th minute when Nguyen Tien Linh had a shot saved by Indonesian goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata.

The match ended 1-0 to Indonesia, giving the Garuda squad a major boost in their quest to advance to the knockout stage.

Asnawi Mangkualam the Hero

Asnawi Mangkualam was the hero of the match for Indonesia. The Ansan Greeners defender was a constant threat down the right flank and provided the assist for the winning goal.

Witan Sulaeman also had a strong game for Indonesia. The Lechia Gdańsk midfielder was always looking for opportunities to create chances and had a number of shots on goal.

Indonesia Still Needs a Win to Secure Knockout Stage Spot

Despite the victory, Indonesia still needs a win in their final group match against Jordan to secure a spot in the knockout stage.

If Indonesia wins against Jordan, they will top Group D and advance to the round of 16 as the group winners. If Indonesia draws or loses against Jordan, they will advance to the round of 16 as the group runners-up.

The match against Jordan will be a tough one, but Indonesia will be confident after their victory over Vietnam. The Garuda squad are now one of the teams to be reckoned with in the AFC Asian Cup.
