ASEAN Summit 2024 in Jakarta: Focusing on Regional Stability and Economic Cooperation

Jakarta, June 16, 2024 – The ASEAN Summit 2024 held in Jakarta concluded with a strong sense of optimism and commitment towards addressing regional and global challenges. Leaders from the 10 ASEAN member countries gathered to discuss key issues including regional stability, economic cooperation, and global challenges impacting Southeast Asia.

Security and Regional Stability

Regarding the situation in the South China Sea, ASEAN leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the area. They agreed to promote the resolution of disputes through dialogue and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

In addition, the threats of terrorism and extremism were major concerns. ASEAN member states agreed to strengthen cooperation in intelligence sharing, law enforcement, and preventive measures to counter these threats. ASEAN also committed to enhancing cooperation with international dialogue partners in combating terrorism and transnational crime.

Economic Cooperation and Digitalization

On the economic front, the ASEAN Summit 2024 emphasized the importance of economic integration and digitalization to support inclusive and sustainable growth. Leaders agreed to expedite the implementation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and to strengthen cooperation within the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) framework.

Furthermore, digital transformation was given special attention. ASEAN leaders agreed to promote digitalization across various sectors, including trade, education, and public services. They also discussed the importance of data protection and cybersecurity in the rapidly evolving digital era.

Indonesia’s Minister of Trade, Zulkifli Hasan, stated that ASEAN has enormous potential to become a global digital economy hub. “With a large population and rapidly growing economies, ASEAN has a golden opportunity to lead in digital innovation and technology-based economy,” he said.

Environmental Issues and Climate Change

The ASEAN Summit 2024 also addressed environmental issues and climate change. Leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in mitigation and adaptation efforts against climate change. They emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and the use of renewable energy to achieve sustainable development.

As part of this commitment, ASEAN plans to expand cooperation with countries outside the region in green energy projects and environmentally friendly technologies. They also agreed to strengthen efforts in biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management.

The ASEAN Summit 2024 concluded with the signing of the Jakarta Declaration, which includes a joint commitment from ASEAN member states to continue strengthening cooperation in various fields.
